PA Turnpike Expansion Overview and Survey

What Is This Project?
The Pennsylvania Turnpike will be widened from four to six lanes between the Lansdale and Norristown interchanges, mileposts A20-A30. The work is expected to start later in 2007. During reconstruction of the bridges along this stretch of roadway, local traffic will be detoured onto nearby roads.

According to design specifications, the total roadway width (including paved shoulders) will increase from the current 72 feet to 122 feet. The expanded roadway will consist of three 12-foot-wide travel lanes on each side, a 26-foot-wide median, and 12-foot-wide shoulders.

As part of this project, 20 bridges will be replaced, including several in Worcester (Morris Rd, Berks Rd, North Wales Rd, Schultz Rd, Bethel Rd, and Skippack Pike).

Stormwater management areas will be expanded to handle the increased runoff from the larger impervious areas.

Additional emergency and maintenance access ramps will be required. At least one is planned to be in Worcester, at Schultz Road -- the same location where a slip ramp was proposed several years ago. That slip ramp was ultimately defeated, due to diligent teamwork by Friends of Worcester, local and state elected officials, and Worcester residents.

Noise walls are planned, to shield some residential developments from the increased noise expected to be generated by the additional traffic on the turnpike. However, no noise walls are currently planned for Worcester!

Friends of Worcester intends to work with residents, local and state officials, and turnpike representatives to make sure that the issues of concern to Worcester residents are addressed and resolved!
